Miner for Seventy Years
Mr Bop Gillon, 3 Priory Row, is certainly one of the oldest if not the oldest working miner in the Country.
He has worked in the pits for 70 years, and has been at Priory Colliery for 20 years. The grand old man, who is in his 82nd year, feels as if he has not had a square deal, for he has been put to work at the tables at the pithead. He declares he is fit for a more “he-man” job.
He started working at the age of nine and has never had a day’s illness in his life. When his working life began he had to get up at four in the morning and walk two miles to work and did not return home until seven in the evening. He had 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
