Local Man Awarded the D.C.M.
Old school mates and friends of Engine room Artificer Cecil P. Welsh, will be pleased to learn that among the awards recently announced in the “London Gazette” for outstanding courage, skill and undaunted devotion to duty in successful patrols in one of H.M. Submarines in that of the D.S.M. to Blantyre born sailor, son of the late John Welsh, J.P. (who at his death was headmaster of Calder Street Advanced Division School) and a brother of Mr John W. Welsh, clerk to the Fifth District Council.
Artificer Welsh was originally with the British-India Steam Navigation Company Limited, and later with the well known shipping firm of Andrew Weir Limited, to whom he made application to be released from his position as first engineer to allow him to join the Navy. Since then he has been in different grades of ships, but most on corvettes. Later he was accepted for the submarine service. His mother now resides at North Shields Northumberland.
