The Golden Wedding
of
Mr & Mrs George McLaughlin
On Thursday Mr and Mrs George McLaughlin, Stonefield Road , Blantyre , celebrated their golden wedding in the Livingstone Memorial U.F. Church Hall, when there were over fifty friends present.
Rev. T.A. Hugh presided over the social gathering and complimented the old couple on the auspicious event.
Mr McLaughlin was born at Baillieston 81 years ago , and at the age of 10 he commenced work in the mines and when working at Woodhall, he remembers of three women working underground—two drawing coal and one acting as bottomer.
His wife, whose maiden name was Helen McGregor, is 74 years of age and was born at Glasgow and they were married in Glasgow by the Rev. John Graham.
They have been 28 years in Blantyre 21 of which he worked at Blantyre Collieries only retiring from work seven years ago. A sad incident in their lives happened in the year 1877, when they lost three of their sons in the disastrous explosion which occurred at Blantyre Collieries. There were 13 children; only two - a son and married daughter are alive. They have 17 grandchildren and five great grand-children.
In the course of the evening, Mr McLaughlin, a nephew on behalf of their large circle of friends presented the worthy old couple with a purse of sovereigns and hoped they would be long spared to one another.
