Mr George Pate, O.B.E., J.P.

1861 - 1945

The death has occurred of Mr George Pate, O.B.E., J.P., late manager of the Carron Company, Falkirk, who was born in 1861 in Waterloo Row, Low Blantyre.

He was a member of a well-known village family. His father, the late George Pate, was employed in the dyeworks at the village. The deceased started work in the office of Merry and Cunninghame, Auchinraith Colliery, and at the age of 33 entered the service of the famous Carron Company as pig iron and coal salesman. Later he served as assistant general manager, and in 1912 was appointed general manager, a position he held until his retiral last year.

As a result of his work during the First World War, he received the O.B.E. Mr Pate is survived by four sons and one daughter. It may be recalled that the late Mrs Pate was a sister of the late John Roberts, publican. It is also interesting to note that Mr Pate audited the first balance-sheet of Blantyre Co-operative Society presented to members on January 3, 1884. He took a keen interest in the early struggles of the society and served as secretary from 1885 till 1891.
