Golden Wedding
Mr and Mrs William Izett
1944
Tomorrow Mr and Mrs William Izett, Korek, Glasgow Road , celebrate their golden wedding. They were married at the Masonic Hall High Blantyre , on February 27, 1894, and one of the ministers who officiated at the marriage Rev.T.A. Hugh, M.A. Livingston Memorial Church, is still to the fore and spending his retirement at Dollar. Mr Izett was clerk of the committee of management of this church for many years.
When Mr Izett was born the population of Blantyre was between 3500 and 4000. In 1927 it had risen to over 18,000. The increase in the population began after the opening up of the coal fields from the year 1861 till about 1897, by which time, several pits were in working order and coal was in full production.
To provide accommodation for the large influx of miners and their families all the coal companies built houses for their workmen. Throughout his life, Mr Izett has been actively associated with the life of Blantyre, and he has been Blantyre correspondent for “The Hamilton Advertiser.” For well over fifty years. He has seen many changes for the better in the social services, and the contrast in the conditions prevailing in Mr Izett’s boyhood and those of to-day are very marked.
