Mrs George Madden

Death of a Hero's Wife

The terrible mining disaster which occurred at Dixon’s Colliery Blantyre on the 22nd October, 1877, when 226 men and youths were killed is recalled by the death early on Saturday morning, of Mrs Geo. Madden, at her home at 7 Forrest Street , Blantyre.

Her husband, who died about thirty years ago, was one of the few men who escaped with his life from the explosion, and for a full fortnight he gave great service in the rescue work in bringing to the surface the bodies of those who were killed.

On his death Mrs Madden, in recognition of her husband’s services at the time of the explosion, was placed on the fund which had been raised for widows and dependants.

Mrs Madden, who was 86 years of age, was a native of Ireland , but had resided in Blantyre nearly the whole of her lifetime.

She had been in failing health for a considerable time and passed away in her sleep. She is survived by a son and three daughters, all of whom are married.
