Nimmo's Band

Did they play at your wedding?
More chance it was your parents wedding?

Nimmo's Band

The time frame is after the war through to late fifties, early sixties.

The band was called Nimmo's Band after the leader Willie Nimo.

In the photograph Willie is playing the accordion. The pianist was Geordie Preston and the drummer was Donald Wilkie.

The "Moonlight Bay" painting on the front of the drum was by Tammy Hillhouse, A local sign writer.

If you have heard of the band why not send an e mail and tell us your memories of  how it was back then and how bands like Nimmos could make you forget your problems, at least until the end of the dance.

Hi Bill,

I was around when Willie Nimmo was playing.

I was in his daughter Helen's class at shool so I was a generation behind Willie.

The point is that from 1950 till 1963 I also played accordion around Blantyre and I did a few deputy jobs for Willie's band.

I played many weddings in the old community hall and the Blantyre Welfare. I played also for the Burleigh church Scottish country dance club. I also played for the scout dances for the Burleigh.

I used to play late night dancing in the Co hall every Friday till I was superseded by the Melody Octet which also gets a mention elsewhere on your site.

I don't have any photos - I didn't know anybody who could afford a camera in those days. But we did get many a mention in the old Blantyre Gazette.

The other band around at that time was led by Jimmy Hislop, who's wife played fiddle for him.

Regards

Bill Agnew
