Patrick Powers
1942
A LOSS TO MINERS.—The death of Mr Patrick Powers, which took place last Saturday at his home 242 Glasgow Road, Blantyre, after a fortnight’s illness, has removed a prominent, painstaking and highly esteemed official, who had a long record of active service with Lanarkshire County Miners’ Union.
Mr Powers had been associated with the union for about forty years, but he had no ambitions to take part in the work of the executive. On the opening up of the Priory Colliery he, for some years was secretary of the union branch at the pit, and for over thirty-five years was Checkweigher at the colliery. Throughout that period he collected the men’s weekly union dues, and these duties he carried out in a most capable manner.
Mr Powers in early life gave many years service as a member of the Old Parish Council, but did not seek re-election when the District Council came into being as the controlling body in the parish. He, with some others was recently awarded the Lanarkshire Miners’ Union diploma for long service. Mr Powers leaves a widow and grown-up family.
