Peter Dewar

1856 - 1938

After a week’s Illness, a well-known and highly respected citizen in the person of Mr Peter Dewar, died at his home, Fleetvale Cottage, Auchinraith Road, last Saturday night. He was actively associated with many organisations and in these his genial and unassuming personality will be greatly missed.

In early life Mr Dewar was a colliery winding engineman, and in later days much of his time was spent in bettering and improving the conditions of this class of workmen. He was among the pioneers who formed the Colliery Winding Enginemen’s and Colliery Firemen’s Union, and for about twenty years he was president of the Scottish union, and for some years was president of the British Federation. In these positions his efforts on behalf of the members will be long remembered.

Mr Dewar was not a man of many words. He carried out his duties in a quite but credible manner, which earned him the esteem and respect of his fellow enginemen. He retired from office many years ago. Mr Dewar however did not spend his retirement in idleness. He took an interest in local affairs and was keenly interested in the social life of the parish. He was for twenty years a member of the Old Parish Council in Blantyre , and was chairman for a part of that period. He was also a member of the executive’s council of the Livingstone National Memorial Trust at Blantyre , was on the executive council of the Blantyre Community Service Centre, and was Chairman of the Blantyre Ratepayers Association. He had a long connection with the Livingstone Memorial Church of Scotland , of which he was an elder and manager, and he was interested in the various agencies of the church.

Mr Dewar, who was a widower, was eighty-two years of age, and is survived by a grown up family. The funeral, which took place on Tuesday to High Blantyre Cemetery , was largely attended.
