Blantyre Folk
Robert Gray
1879
IN MEMORIAM.-----In our obituary last week was reported the demise of Mr Robert Gray, one of the oldest and most successful merchants in this parish of Blantyre . For nearly half a century he commanded an extensive trade. A true type of the old-school, he possessed sterling cautious business habits, well worthy of being imitated.
In private life he was of a quiet, retiring nature, and many now remember his words as to the results of the rash go ahead building speculations, springing up like mushrooms on all sides around him.
He was a depositor in the City of Glasgow Bank, and, no doubt, its failure gave him much annoyance and considerably shattered his health, as in the case and death of Mr McCallum, their agent here.
The remains of Mr Gray were on Tuesday conveyed from Stonefield to the new cemetery at High Blantyre. Previous to the removal of the body from the house, was engaged in by the Rev. Stewart Wright and the Rev, Mr Macdonald. At half-past two o’clock, the cortege which consisted of a hearse, followed by a large concourse of mourners and many private carriages, left Stonefield for the place of interment. Along the route of the procession, many turned out to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased.
