Blantyre Folk
In Memorium
To Mr William Small
Who Died Suddenly at his Residence,
Olivia Cottage, Blantyre, on the 23rd Inst.
Hushed now forever is that kindly voice
That cheered so many o’er life’s rugged path,
Stifled now for evermore the clarion tones
That erst rang out ‘gainst wrong in splendid wrath.
The poor and needy ever sought his ear
With words of hope and cheer he sent them forth;
The widow and the orphan turned to him
As natural as the needle to the North.
He fought the good fight with untiring zeal,
And never doffed his armour till the end;
He won the proudest title man can own,
The title is, “He was the poor man’s friend.”
Donald Mathieson, Low Blantyre.
